Three Facts/Concepts Learned
1) President Lincoln initially wrote the Emancipation Proclamation to bring the Confederacy and the Union together in addition to abolishing slavery in the Confederacy. He knew that it wouldn't work out if he forced every state to end slavery, so he only applied the Emancipation Proclamation to the Confederate states.
2) Slavery started in 1619 when the Dutch entered the United States. They brought in 20 Africans and introduced the act of slavery to White Americans. The Government legalized slavery in 1641 (there was no law against it before that).
3) The British and the French planned on helping the Confederacy fight the Union during the Civil War, but the Emancipation Proclamation prevented that by uniting the Confederacy and the Union.
